Can you believe that we're into February now? It seemed like yesterday we were popping champagne and ringing in the New Year. The California Winter League Road Trips are a memory as now my attention is focusing to the next two months of the first part of the season which I like to refer to as the "College Phase." Roughly from February to the beginning of the professional season in April, I'm hitting up the college campuses of the region for some NCAA action. I am excited for the season that I have planned, and I think the adventures will be unlike any I have experienced.
Starting this weekend, I'll be starting off small, literally, with the Small College Opener. The big D1 programs haven't started their seasons yet, but the smaller schools are up and running, with some already into the second week of games. Local Riverside City College is hosting West LA College tomorrow night, so I'm going to make that my first college game of the season. I'm trying out a new scoring system in preparation for my work starting in April, so I will be working on that.
I briefly went through my plans in the opening post of the season, but a quick summation will see me hit up ballparks in Riverside, San Diego, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Malibu, Huntington Beach, Redlands, San Bernardino, Irvine, Fullerton, and, finally, in Santa Barbara.
What's surprising is that even with all the cities and schools, I'll probably end up going to fewer College games this season than last. The way the schedule works out with the long holiday weekends, which I try and take advantage of, teams are starting later than last year. I'll be bumping up against the Professional season, so I had to cut down on the games. It's not a big deal though as I am so excited to go to these places I listed and, hopefully, see some great games.
So, without further ado, let's go back to campus, cheer on the alma mater, and celebrate what's great about College Baseball!
Always take on a 3-0 pitch ;)
