300: Rise of the Playoffs

Before I begin this post, I want to let all of you know that I'll be publishing the first part of my Catalina Essay tomorrow. I finally sat down and started writing it, and I'll probably release it in it's entirety during the course of the week.

With that said, today was a very big milestone for me and Baseball Road Trips. This afternoon, I attended my 300th professional baseball game. I started keeping track in my logbook way back in June of 2006, and it has taken me just about nine seasons to make it to this mark. It's hard to believe all of the experiences that are woven into those 300 games and these years. Each one of those games tells a story, and is unique in every single way.

I think it is fantastic that I reached this milestone, at this particular time, when both of my main teams, the 66ers and Angels, are in the midst of tight playoff races. Living in Oregon, I never had really experienced a legitimate pennant race because the Emeralds always stunk, and it was so hard to rally behind the Mariners. Now that I have some real skin in the game and rooted interest in two teams, it's so exciting to live in the playoff push with them.

It was fitting that 300 be at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Fate had it that the Angels played host to the defending AL West champions and rival Oakland A's. The atmosphere was so intense and fun, and I can only hope that I actually get to experience, in person, the playoffs.

The Angels scored six runs in the bottom of the second to sweep the series against the A's. Matt Shoemaker pitched seven shutout innings, and Mike Trouy and Chris Ianetta both added solo homers as the Angels beat the A's 8-1.

Besides the game, I didn't do anything special to commemorate the event. I rode my bike, got my bagels and coffee, and went to the game. Maybe I'll sit down this week and crack open a beer to toast to the achievement.

So, look for the first part of thd Catalina essay tomorrow. Also, keeping my fingers crossed, I might be making a trip to see the 66ers in the playoffs. I'll have a better picture of the pennant race after tonight's games.

Always take on a 3-0 pitch ;)
